The goal of the Global Water Curves project is to define, develop and populate a set of “water curves” based on and as a complement to the Coalition for Energy-Efficient Comminution (CEEC) energy curves.
The mining industry is dependent on the use of water in its processes and is a vital resource required for metals production. Globally, water is under increasing scrutiny as it is essential for the survival and sustainability of all living things. Access to and use of freshwater by mining companies is becoming increasing challenging due to legislative or regulatory constraints.
As a required resource across the mining business water is also a significant cost to an operation. The true cost of water usage in mining operations is not well understood
This project will define metrics and produce Global Water Curves tools that can be used to benchmark and evaluate water usage in mineral process equipment particularly those related to grinding. It will complement the comminution energy curves used to benchmark and evaluate comminution process energy usage.
It is anticipated that the definition, development and population of these Global Water Curves will provide a useful set of tools for the mine operator and mineral processor and eventually equipment designer to reduce water use, increase water recycling and reduce water losses in mineral processing.
Expected outcomes and benefits
The expected outcomes and benefits would be to develop a set of Global Water Curves as a complement to the energy curves with the following aims:
- Provide a water usage benchmark for mineral processors and operators in general
- Indicate more easily best practices in water use in mineral processing
- Indicate best practice in water addition to the comminution circuit
- Indicate if a change in process operation impacts positively or not these water metrics.
As a collaborative project between Coalition for Energy-Efficient Comminution (CEEC), and Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC), this project will serve to stimulate additional international collaboration.
